What is Active Directory

Active Directory is Microsoft's enterprise directory service. In IT infrastructures powered by Microsoft's Windows Server platform, it stores and protects all vital IT security components including user accounts, security groups, security and access policies. It is the focal point of IT security and administrative delegation for IT management.

Active Directory plays a mission-critical role in IT infrastructures powered by Microsoft's Windows Server platform for it is the very foundation of security, the nerver-center of IT management, and the focal point of administrative delegation. In addition, it is also the backbone of Microsoft Exchange Server and Microsoft's Public Key (PKI) Infrastructure offerings, and as such is the proverbial heart of the entire IT infrastructure.
